This exercise teaches you how to build a skybox.

Build A Skybox

Learn to create a properly correlated skybox.

  1. Examine the hierarchy and double click the modifier named RectangleGeometryModifier.
    The idea here is to increase the size of the ground plane so that it will be distant from the landscape geometry.
  2. Double click the modifier named RectangleGeometryModifier.
  3. This displays modifier properties in the property editor.
  4. Set Minimum X to -3000 m. Be sure to include the m.
  5. Set Minimum Y to -3000 m. Be sure to include the m.
  6. Set Maximum X to 3000 m. Be sure to include the m.
  7. Set Maximum Y to 3000 m. Be sure to include the m.
  8. Set X Resolution to 1.
  9. Set Y Resolution to 1.
  10. Select Worksheet » Properties
  11. This displays worksheet properties in the property editor.
  12. Find the Camera Settings property group.
  13. Set Camera Orientation X to 45.
  14. Set Camera Orientation Y to 0.
  15. Set Camera Orientation Z to 0.
  16. Set Camera Position X to 0.
  17. Set Camera Position Y to -18000.
  18. Set Camera Position Z to 34000.
  19. Set Far Clipping Distance to 100000 ft. This is a picture of the worksheet.
  20. Left click the worksheet and hit SPACE to set the software to select mode.
  21. Hit H to set the software to select faces.
  22. Left click the face. The face highlights, indicating selection. This is a picture of the worksheet.
  23. Right click and select Extrude from the listed options.
  24. With a scene this large you won't be able to see the extrusion just yet.
  25. Examine the hierarchy and double click the modifier named Extrude.
  26. This displays modifier properties in the property editor.
  27. Set Direction X to 6000 m. Don't forget the m. This is a picture of the worksheet.
  28. That's a very large box! It's perfect.

Apply Modifiers To The Top Side Face

Apply material and projection modifiers to the top side face.

  1. Left click the top side face. The face turns red, indicating selection. This is a picture of the worksheet.
  2. Right click and select Material from the listed options. Scenome adds a MaterialModifier to the mesh construction history.
  3. Left click the top side face again.
  4. Right click and select Planar Project Texture from the listed options. Scenome adds a PlanarProjectModifier to the mesh construction history.
  5. Change the name of MaterialModifier to MaterialModifier: TopSideFace.
  6. Change the name of PlanarProjectModifier to PlanarProject: TopSideFace.

Apply Modifiers To The Front Side Face

Apply material and projection modifiers to the front side face.

  1. Left click the front side face. The face turns red, indicating selection. This is a picture of the worksheet.
  2. Right click and select Material from the listed options. Scenome adds a MaterialModifier to the mesh construction history.
  3. Left click the front side face again.
  4. Right click and select Planar Project Texture from the listed options. Scenome adds a PlanarProjectModifier to the mesh construction history.
  5. Change the name of MaterialModifier to MaterialModifier: FrontSideFace.
  6. Change the name of PlanarProjectModifier to PlanarProject: FrontSideFace.
    Next we'll apply a modifier to the RightSideFace.

Apply Modifiers To The Right Side Face

Apply material and projection modifiers to the right side face.

  1. Select Worksheet » Properties
  2. This displays worksheet properties in the property editor.
  3. Find the Camera Settings property group.
  4. Set Camera Orientation X to 45.
  5. Set Camera Orientation Y to 0.
  6. Set Camera Orientation Z to -90.
  7. Set Camera Position X to 32000.
  8. Set Camera Position Y to 0.
  9. Set Camera Position Z to 32000.
  10. Left click the right side face. The face turns red, indicating selection.
  11. Right click and select Material from the listed options. Scenome adds a MaterialModifier to the mesh construction history.
  12. Left click the right side face again.
  13. Right click and select Planar Project Texture from the listed options. Scenome adds a PlanarProjectModifier to the mesh construction history.
  14. Change the name of MaterialModifier to MaterialModifier: RightSideFace.
  15. Change the name of PlanarProjectModifier to PlanarProject: RightSideFace.
    Next we'll apply a modifier to the BackSideFace.

Apply Modifiers To The Back Side Face

Apply material and projection modifiers to the back side face.

  1. Select Worksheet » Properties
  2. This displays worksheet properties in the property editor.
  3. Find the Camera Settings property group.
  4. Set Camera Orientation X to 45.
  5. Set Camera Orientation Y to 0.
  6. Set Camera Orientation Z to -180.
  7. Set Camera Position X to 0.
  8. Set Camera Position Y to 32000.
  9. Set Camera Position Z to 32000.
  10. Left click the back side face. The face turns red, indicating selection.
  11. Right click and select Material from the listed options. Scenome adds a MaterialModifier to the mesh construction history.
  12. Left click the back side face again.
  13. Right click and select Planar Project Texture from the listed options. Scenome adds a PlanarProjectModifier to the mesh construction history.
  14. Change the name of MaterialModifier to MaterialModifier: BackSideFace.
  15. Change the name of PlanarProjectModifier to PlanarProject: BackSideFace.
    Next we'll apply a modifier to the LeftSideFace.

Apply Modifiers To The Left Side Face

Apply material and projection modifiers to the left side face.

  1. Select Worksheet » Properties
  2. This displays worksheet properties in the property editor.
  3. Find the Camera Settings property group.
  4. Set Camera Orientation X to 45.
  5. Set Camera Orientation Y to 0.
  6. Set Camera Orientation Z to -270.
  7. Set Camera Position X to 32000.
  8. Set Camera Position Y to 0.
  9. Set Camera Position Z to 32000.
  10. Left click the left side face. The face turns red, indicating selection.
  11. Right click and select Material from the listed options. Scenome adds a MaterialModifier to the mesh construction history.
  12. Left click the left side face again.
  13. Right click and select Planar Project Texture from the listed options. Scenome adds a PlanarProjectModifier to the mesh construction history.
  14. Change the name of MaterialModifier to MaterialModifier: LeftSideFace.
  15. Change the name of PlanarProjectModifier to PlanarProject: LeftSideFace.
  16. Examine the hierarchy and rename NewParametricMeshNode as Skybox.
