Build A Trimmed Mesh

Get ready to build your first road.

Preparation Work

This series of instructions contains preparation work.

  1. Make sure Scenome is not running.
  2. Start Scenome.
  3. Open \EXERCISES\BUILD_A_ROAD.BOX from inside the Scenome data folder.
  4. The path is likely C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Scenomics\Exercises.
    NOTE: Your system might use a specific user name in the path instead of "OWNER".
  5. Select Worksheet » Global Edges from the main menu. [ ALT + W + E ]
  6. Select Worksheet » Show » Lights from the main menu. [ ALT + W + S + L ]
  7. The worksheet looks like this: This is a picture of the worksheet.
  8. Examine the hierarchy on the left side of the desktop. This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  9. Right click over the group node named Palette and select Set Active Palette from the listed options.
  10. Select Draw » Freehand Linear from the main menu.
  11. Select File » Save from the main menu.
  12. This displays the Save As dialog.
  13. Set the file name to USER_MY_FIRST_ROAD.BOX and click Save.

Draw The Rail Curve

This series of instructions teach you to draw the rail curve.

  1. Move the cursor over the location -24,-24,0 on the grid. Look in the coordinate indicator on the lower right to check the cursor position.
  2. Left click at -24,-24,0 to set the first point of the curve.
  3. Move the cursor around and you'll notice a bright green line attach to the cursor. This shows you the line formed by the draw tool.
  4. Draw the subsequent points at the following coordinates. If you make a mistake, hit X to undo the last point drawn:
    • -18,-6,0
    • -20,-17,0
    • -19,-12,0
    • -21,-7,0
    • -23,0,0
    • -23,10,0
    • -19,17,0
    • -8,22,0
    • 1,23,0
    • 15,22,0
    • 22,20,0
    • 25,14,0
    • 22,7,0
    • 14,7,0
    • 8,4,0
    • 6,0,0
    • 5,-5,0
    • 8,-11,0
    • 16,-15,0
  5. Right click to finish the curve after you draw the last point.
  6. The worksheet looks like this: This is a picture of the worksheet.
  7. Examine the hierarchy on the left side of the desktop. A path node is present. This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  8. Set the name of the path node to Rail Curve.

Draw The Cross-Section Curve

This series of instructions teach you to draw the cross-section curve.

  1. Move the cursor over the location -1,0,0 on the grid.
  2. Left click at -1,0,0 to set the first point of the curve.
  3. Draw the subsequent point at the following coordinates:
    • 1,0,0
  4. Right click to finish the curve after you draw the last point.
  5. The worksheet looks like this: This is a picture of the worksheet.
  6. Examine the hierarchy on the left side of the desktop. A path node is present. This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  7. Set the name of the second path node to Cross-Section Curve.
    We're making a very small road because it's easier to teach you to draw if the scene is fairly small.

Sweep The Curves

This series of instructions teach you to sweep the curves.

  1. Examine the hierarchy.
  2. Left the path node named Rail Curve.
  3. The node highlights, indicating selection.
  4. Hold down SHIFT and left click the path node named Cross-Section Curve.
  5. The list of paths is selected.
  6. Right click and select Create Sweep Relationship from the listed options.
  7. The worksheet looks like this: This is a picture of the worksheet.
  8. Examine the hierarchy on the left side of the desktop.
  9. Completely expand the group node named SweepCollectionGroup. This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  10. This node-set contains all the nodes required by the sweep.
  11. Left click the first group node named Palette. This contains the material node named NewMaterialNode [ Directly beneath Link: InfiniteLight: -1,-1,-1]. Hit DEL on the keyboard to delete the group.
  12. Change the name of SweepCollectionGroup to RoadCollectionGroup.
  13. Change the name of Palette: NewSweepMesh to Palette: RoadMesh.
  14. Change the name of NewMaterialNode to RoadMaterial.
  15. Change the name of NewSweepMesh to RoadMesh.
  16. The hierarchy looks like this: This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  17. Choose Select » Deselect All from the main menu.
  18. Save your work.
