Slide 1 - Build Yakima-W 1/4 Geocell

Introduction

In this exercise you'll learn to acquire imagery, elevation data, and third party software. Some of these instruction sets are redundant, but we are not able to provide instructions on installing these applications into your system path.

This is the first part of a series of exercises designed to teach you how to build a large, high-resolution terrain database from start to finish.

  1. Open an Explorer Window to \SCENOMICS\EXERCISES\YAKIMA-W.
  2. Create a new folder named IMAGE_PROCESSING.

Download GDAL

For the purposes of this exercise, we've supplied you with GDAL, Geodata Abstraction Library. The license agreement is included in this file. By downloading this file, you agree to be bound by the terms of the GDAL SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT issued by Frank Warmerdam. This ZIP archive contains a copy of the GDAL SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT. Please see http://www.gdal.org/ for more information.

Clear, precise place names help you work more efficiently. These downloads take a few minutes at least; now is a good time for a coffee break. You could also visit Wikipedia and read about parrots.

Acquire Elevation Imagery

Previous exercises worked with DEM files for definition and displacement. This exercise teaches you how to use a GEOTIFF file.

  1. Go to the Explorer window and move up on directory to \SCENOMICS\EXERCISES\YAKIMA-W.
  2. Right click on this link to download this GEOTIFF file and save it in \EXERCISES\YAKIMA-W.
This GEOTIFF was acquired for free from the USGS seamless data distribution service. There is an exercise that teaches you how to acquire data from this web site.
