Creating A Master Database

Learn how to create links that reference specific nodes inside an external database.

  1. Make sure Scenome is not running.
  2. Start Scenome.
  3. Open \EXERCISES\DISPLACEMENT\CREATE_A_MASTER_FILE.BOX from inside the Scenome data folder.
  4. The path is likely C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Scenomics\Exercises.
    NOTE: Your system might use a specific user name in the path instead of "OWNER".
  5. Select Worksheet » Global Edges from the main menu. [ ALT + W + E ]
  6. The worksheet looks like this: This is a picture of the worksheet.
  7. Select File » Save As from the main menu.
  8. This displays the Save As dialog.
  9. Set the file name to USER_TERRAIN_MASTER.BOX and click Save.
  10. Examine the hierarchy on the left side of the desktop. This is a picture of the hierarchy.
  11. Right click over the group node named Scene.
  12. Select Create » Level-Of-Detail Node from the listed options.
  13. Left click NewLevelOfDetail.
  14. The node highlights, indicating selection.
  15. Wait a second and left click the node again.
  16. The node opens for naming.
  17. Set the name to Terrain 1x1 High Detail.
  18. Hit ENTER when you are finished.
  19. Right click over Terrain 1x1 High Detail.
  20. Select Create » Link Node from the listed options.
  21. Examine the hierarchy.
  22. Left click the small + to the left of Terrain 1x1 High Detail.

  24. Left click NewLinkNode.
  25. The node highlights, indicating selection.
  26. Wait a second and left click the node again.
  27. The node opens for naming.
  28. Set the name to Link: TerrainMesh 1x1.
  29. This naming convention isn't required but it makes it easier to determine the content referenced by a link node.
  30. Double click Link: TerrainMesh 1x1.
  31. This displays link properties in the property editor.
  32. Scroll down and find the Link Settings property group.
  33. Left click the right column of the Point At This .BOX File parameter field.
  34. This displays the Open dialog and allows you to select the database you wish to reference.
  35. Set the File Path to EXERCISES\DISPLACEMENT\USER_TERRAIN_1x1.BOX.
  36. Click Open when you are ready.
  37. This link node points at the file but this isn't really specific enough for our purpose.
  38. Set the Node Path to /Scene/Terrain_1x1.
  39. Right click on the link node and choose Use Relative Path from the listed options.
  40. Right click on the link node and choose Set Correct Type from the listed options.

  42. Examine the hierarchy.
  43. Double-click Terrain 1x1 High Detail.
  44. This displays level-of-detail properties in the browser.
  45. Scroll down and find the Switching Options property group.
  46. Set Switch Out Distance to 128.
  47. Set Center X to -16.
  48. Set Center Y to -16.
  49. Set Center Z to 0.
  50. This sets the level-of-detail center to the centroid of the mesh on X/Y.
  51. Select File » Save from the main menu.
